Asthma is a chronic condition generally associated with upper respiratory tract in which airways is obscured and constricted. This condition can be aggravated by many different factors the major ones include cold weather, excessive exertion, exercise, some kind of allergy, and even doing extra strenuous work. Asthma occurs with the following symptoms namely shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, fever, and chest congestion or chest tightness. Asthma can be hereditary in some cases.
During asthma attacks, the person feels lack of oxygen during breathing, starts to experience chest tightness, even feels tenderness in the extremities, and also starts sweating. Severe asthma attacks may be life threatening and fatal.
Treatment of asthma is divided mainly in two types:
1. Long-term control of asthma.
2. Quick relief by medications.
Asthma medications can be given orally or through inhalation with the help of inhalers. Metered dose inhalers and MDI’s are used as the mode of treatment and nebulizers the easiest method of treating asthma. Anti-inflammatory are used to prevent blood vessels from leaving fluid and helps in reducing the inflammation, which decreases the spasms in the airway muscles. Asthma is not curable, but if managed in an appropriate way can lead to a healthy lifestyle.
Asthma is caused due to different environmental allergens including mold, weeds, plants, pets, dust mites, ragweed, etc. Thus, asthma attacks can be reduced by keeping these allergens away if possible and avoidance of pets can also help in eliminating these attacks. Asthma is mostly flared up at night or in the early mornings. It occurs mostly during winter season, so proper care should be taken to avoid asthma attacks.
Yoga, biofeedback, and naturopathy are also the natural ways for treating asthma. Proper diet should also be planned so that asthma remains well controlled.
Asthma is a chronic condition, which leads to even death, but proper attention and medical treatment helps to control this fatal disease.
